Project Case Study: The Future of Airports
Project Title: Creating vision 2030 of Sweden’s airports
Client: Swedavia AB & DOCERE
Year: 2023
Redefining the Future of Air Travel
Swedavia AB and DOCERE invited a diverse group of Sweden’s most forward-thinking experts to create the Vision 2030 for airports in Sweden, starting with reimagining Arlanda International Airport. As the world demands more sustainable, innovative approaches to air travel, Swedavia set out on an ambitious mission to make Arlanda a global example of a holistic 3D approach to sustainability.
They called on Nordic Future Labs to help shape this vision, focusing on transforming the airport into a green temple that balances environmental, social, and financial sustainability.
Our task was to turn the entire travel journey - from home to destination - into an experience that is seamless, sustainable, and meaningful. By integrating cutting-edge technology with sustainable practices, we aimed to turn Arlanda into more than just a transit hub: it would become a global showcase of Swedish culture, a thriving business hub, and a green oasis for travelers.

The Challenge
Swedavia’s vision extended beyond simply modernizing the airport; it was about redefining the travel experience and maximizing the value provided to passengers.
The challenge was to rethink the entire journey, incorporating:
-
Sustainable Mobility Solutions: Integrate green, electric, and innovative transportation methods for travelers before they even reach the airport.
-
Enhanced Airport Experience: Design a tranquil and efficient environment for travelers, seamlessly blending technology and nature.
-
Cultural Showcase: Reflect Sweden’s culture and values through the airport’s design and offerings.
-
Economic Opportunities: Create spaces that generate additional revenue through strategic merchandising, hospitality, and cultural events, enhancing both the traveler’s experience and the airport’s financial sustainability.
Our Approach
A Holistic, Future-Ready Design
At Nordic Future Labs, we combined a 3D perspective on sustainability -encompassing environmental, social, and financial aspects - with a strong emphasis on innovation.

Here’s how we reimagined Arlanda
1
From Home to Destination - A Seamless Journey
We envisioned the traveler’s journey beginning at home, integrating sustainable mobility solutions such as electric transport and green, low-emission hubs. The airport was designed as a continuation of this journey, featuring electric vehicle charging stations and green transit options within and around the airport.
2
A Green, Contemplative Oasis
We proposed transforming Arlanda into a green temple, incorporating biophilic designs with green walls, living ecosystems, and abundant natural light. This created an environment that supports mental well-being, providing travelers a serene space amidst the busy nature of airports.
3
A Hub for Innovation and Culture
We designed the airport as a multifaceted space, where transit meets business, culture, and community. Meeting points and state-of-the-art facilities were created for business travelers, while cultural showcases through art and architecture turned the airport into a destination in its own right.
4
Sustainable Economic Growth
To maximize commercial opportunities, we developed a strategy that revamped retail and hospitality spaces, aligning them with sustainable principles. This created a framework where economic growth and environmental responsibility were not at odds but worked together to enhance the passenger experience and generate revenue.
5
Cutting-Edge Technology
We integrated AI-driven security checks, contactless services, and smart infrastructure to ensure that technology enhanced the traveler’s journey without creating friction. The goal was a seamless experience where every technological advancement served the passenger quietly in the background.
